Quick Comparison Guide: SUV vs. Sedan

Sedans have always been what people picture when they hear the word “car”. However, thanks to low fuel prices and models become more car-like, SUVs have also grown in popularity over the last few years.

Here are the advantages you can expect from each:

SUVs

Space: In an SUV, you’ll find the square footage necessary – whether you’re looking for a car that’ll carry extra passengers or extra cargo. Passengers in the rear can stretch out and relax on long rides. Even in compact models, the cargo capacity is more than what you would find in a sedan.

Capability: All-wheel drive is standard on most models, making an SUV better equipped to handle hazardous conditions. If you’re an adventure enthusiast who spends a lot of time driving through severe weather or off-roading, you’re better off buying an SUV.

Visibility: You enjoy a higher driving position behind the wheel of an SUV. This, along with larger surrounding windows grants you a better view of the road.

Sedans

Safety: Sedans tend to be safer, and have the advantage of closed trucks. Storing your valuables there keeps them out of sight, unlike storing them in the back of an SUV.

Fuel Economy: In terms of fuel economy, sedans still reign supreme, thanks to their smaller size. The four-cylinder engine found on most sedans will always be more efficient than the SUV’s V-6 or V-8.

Drivability: Sedans are much easier to drive because they aren’t as top-heavy as SUVs are. There’s a lesser chance of a rollover when maneuvering through sharp corners in a city. Plus, parking in a crowded lot is much easier.

Budget: When you opt for a sedan over an SUV, gas isn’t the only thing you’ll be saving money on. Owning and maintaining a sedan is a lot cheaper overall.

Tip: If you simply can’t decide between the two, consider a crossover. These vehicles combine the best of both worlds. They offer more interior space than a sedan and better drivability than an SUV.
