Just because you’re working in your pajamas at your kitchen table doesn’t mean you’re doing less. In some ways, working from home right now is more challenging than working from an office.
Here are some tips that’ll keep you effective:
Designate a Space Exclusively for Work
Lounging on the couch with your laptop may work for a day or two. But since we’re likely going to be working remotely for an indefinite amount of time, you’d benefit from carving out a dedicated workspace. Start with a corner if you don’t have a room – it’ll keep distractions at bay and help you stay productive.
Stay Organized and Maintain a Routine
Create weekly or daily schedules. Use project management tools like Toggl.
Create and share a project calendar and to-do list with your boss and team. Submit regular project updates and set up digital reminders. Monthly (or weekly) catch-up calls can also help everyone stay informed and on track.
Set Boundaries with Colleagues and Family Members
You don’t get to pack up and walk out the door at the end of your shift when working from home. Because all aspects of your life now exist in the same space, it’s now more important than ever to establish boundaries.
While being accountable is important, it’s also important to determine a time frame when your co-workers/manager can contact you. Similarly, set boundaries with the people you share your home with. Make it known that although you’re physically present during work hours, you’re unavailable.
Chat with Coworkers
Without conversations with colleagues to provide the occasional distraction from work, you may end up feeling isolated and stressed. Use platforms like Slack to keep in touch and share appropriate bits of personal information (like your favorite new shows). This will give you a space to blow off some steam (if you need to) and help keep your spirits up.
Allow Yourself to Be Human
You’ve probably never had to work from home while simultaneously worrying about your family, your health, your finances, and more. It should come as no surprise then, that you’re probably not going to be as productive as you normally are. It’s a global crisis, and almost everyone is in the same boat as you – so cut yourself some slack.
Step away from your desk when you need to, and take regular breaks.
